Toyota 86 R3 Rally Car Revealed

A Toyota 86-based R3 rally car will be developed as part of the Japanese car maker’s customer motorsport program.

The Toyota Motorsport GmbH-developed GT86 CS-R3 will be built according to R3 regulations and equipped to the maximum specification permitted with a six-speed sequential gearbox, limited slip differential, modified engine and adapted brakes.

Full specifications are yet to be released, however, with Toyota promising details in the coming months.

The announcement comes as part of TMG’s commitment to customer motorsport and rallying; Toyota says private rally-car purchases are a key element in TMG’s long-term business strategy.

Of the announcement, TMG principle engineer for customer motorsport, Nico Elhert, said, “The GT86 CS-R3 promises to be a thrilling car on the rally stages; with rear-wheel drive we can expect some dramatic action which is sure to be entertaining for drivers and fans alike.

“We expect demand to be high so we are looking forward to seeing a lot of GT86 CS-R3 rally cars in action.”

Previous TMG-developed racers have included the Yaris R1 entry-level rally car, and a478kW version of the Lexus LS460. In 2012, Toyota said it hoped for TMG to function much like AMG does for Mercedes-Benz, as part of Toyota president Akio Toyoda’s desire to rebuild Toyota as a brand with enthusiast appeal.

The TMG GT86 CS-R3 will be targeted to private buyers who compete in R3 rallies, with first deliveries expected to be made in time for the 2015 season.
